The Department of Student Involvement and Leadership Development firmly believes in the value of service to one’s community and has thus incorporated volunteerism as a component of the Department’s Leadership Development Program.
Volunteerism and Service Opportunities
In the Department’s endeavor to assist students in finding service opportunities, an up-to-date directory of volunteerism opportunities and service agencies, including agency contact information and a description of the services being sought, is maintained by the Leadership & Volunteerism staff.
**Alternative Spring Break 2010 Information Here**
An exciting addition to SILD's list of service programs! In 2009, NIU students had the opportunity to spend their Spring Break aiding other individuals in need. Last year we traveled to Galveston, Texas to help with Hurricane Ike relief efforts.
ASB 2010 participants will be working with three major social issues: hunger and homelessness, disaster relief, and environmental issues. While exact locations are yet to be determined, each location will allow the opportunity to have direct service with that social issue in another part of the country. Locations under consideration are Chattanooga, Boston, Denver, Florida, and California.
Program costs are $550-600. These costs include transportation, lodging, and meals (while on-site). A $25 non-refundable deposit (cash or check only) is required at the time of sign up, and a payment plan is available for the remainder amount. Opportunities for group and individual fund-raising are available to help off-set out-of-pocket expenses.
Download the application here. Completed applications and $25 deposit are due to the SILD office by 4:30 on Wednesday, October 21. Applications will be reviewed, and participants will be notified on or around October 28. Questions can be directed to Becky Harlow at rharlow@niu.edu.
